Earlier this week a draft law was announced requiring companies supplying the bloc to prove that their agricultural products were not linked to deforestation.
The regulation is targeted at commodities where consumption by Europe’s 450 million consumers contributes the most to deforestation; including Beef, wood, palm oil, soy, coffee and cocoa.
Nico Muzi, the Europe director of the Mighty Earth campaign group, said: “The EU is sending a clear message to major supermarkets and retailers: one of the largest economies in the world simply won’t accept agricultural products linked to deforestation.”
